J3 Foundation - Logo

J3 Foundation, a Los Angeles-based non-profit group focused on after-school reading programs for youth scholars, offers free after-school literacy programs for fourth-graders reading below grade level. Their curriculum is built on the pillars of evidence-based programming, collaborations between schools and the community, and culturally relevant books. They are committed to current brain research that indicates that it is best to address our students’ human needs in order to meet their academic needs.

Objective

J3 Foundation wanted a more functional website that focused on its true mission and promoted its commitment to improving lifelong skills for kids in high-needs schools. With a diverse group of stakeholders that ranged from educators, donors, volunteers, interns, creatives, and parents, J3’s existing website needed to be updated to reflect an evolving foundation and mission. Additionally, the current website was not easy to build upon, update, or expand; its pre-made template wasn’t meeting its needs.

Wanting to keep their existing brand and logo, J3 engaged Lounge Lizard’s award-winning design team to create a new, engaging website that used their logo and brand. It more aptly conveyed their commitment to reading excellence in a culturally appropriate format. They also wanted to create a donation tool using a favored third-party website with customized form fills and CTA’s that would reach and engage many types of users.

Approach

Lounge Lizard’s design team of Brandtenders felt a keen sense of investment in helping the J3 non-profit in its mission to support children learning how to read. There was a shared passion for creating a website that told the J3 story and illustrated its commitment to helping children. The Lounge Lizard designers ensured the website design created a beautiful and functional platform that would aptly assist J3 in pushing closer to its goal.

Central to the J3 mission, the new website was crafted to create a path for everyone interested in finding a way to help — no matter how they want to get involved: as an educator or volunteer, a parent, a donor, a corporate partnership, or an intern. The design pros at Lounge Lizard, using top-tier UI/UX, made it easy for every type of user to express their interest in the foundation through CTA’s and links that guide them to their destination.

To create a fun, bubbly online experience for users, the design team used the curves and symbols in their logo, including arches, circles, and stars, throughout the website to tie the design back to their logo and brand. Their brand colors were consistently used throughout the website to further marry the design and its program.

With the design concept entirely crafted with visuals and layout, the development team built custom modules within a top-tier CMS to create a clean user flow from start to finish. Kindful CRM integration and an enhanced linking structure that linked their various book titles to websites such as Good Reads and Amazon were used for donations. From there, the website was integrated with Online SEO, premier page speed, ADA, GDPR, and CCPA Compliance, and WordFence for increased security.

Impact

The newly launched J3 website allows the leadership team to visualize the results of its programs. It guides its donors and volunteers through strong calls to action, increasing its impact on the community.
