Having a powerful enterprise mobile strategy is essential in today’s technologically driven business world, but that might be a big problem if you don’t know what your enterprise mobile strategy is.

To be perfectly honest, the term itself still confuses quite a few people because the definition has evolved, much as mobility has evolved, over the past few years. So rather than putting the cart before the horse, let’s start by talking about enterprise mobility in today’s world.

The idea of enterprise mobility has to do with shifting aspects of work towards cloud services and mobile devices and away from what have been conventional methods of performing business tasks. This concept not only encompasses people who work from remotely locations, including home, and with mobile devices, but also includes the general mobility of data and how available it is.

Think of what service personnel are able to accomplish on a service call with a tablet providing them direct access to networks and information with a tap of the finger. Or even in the service industry where some restaurants utilize smart devices for order taking rather than the pen and pad method.

It should be a key aspect of any successful business plan with a sound strategy in place to allow your company to drive profits and fuel innovation.

Simple steps to create a strategy

So how can you create an effective strategy? Just like anything else in the business world, there are lots of opinions and ideas. Here are some simple steps to use as an excellent starting point:

  • Start with business goals – Sort of a no brainer…what are your business goals from most to least important? How do apps fit into those goals? How about working remotely? You need to identify the ways in which you can improve your business via mobility.
  • Create a mobile solution plan – With your goals firmly in hand, now it is time to draw the map from Point A to Point B. Part of that journey involves identifying the right vehicle and road you will take for each and every goal. So put pen to paper and consider the summary of each goal, benefits, technology needed, end users, etc to really understand how each goal will be met and what will be the targets for accomplishment.
  • Craft a workflow analysis – Every function in a work environment needs a proper workflow to be effective along with an understanding of how many units of X it takes to make Y. So craft a flow or modify an existing one to see how mobile will impact a process.
  • Craft a technology design – Hand in hand with the workflow analysis is determine the tech that will be used in a workflow. From mobile platform to OS to apps and more there needs to be a complete technological blueprint created.
  • Create your budget – Rather than just lumping this mobile budget with another, look to carve out an individual budget. This will allow a better understanding of the cost to the business as well as a way to measure the value you get along with the ROI.
  • Create an implementation flow – You may or may not have existing technology in place that will be affected by your changes. This step is used to compare what you have to where you want to be and then figure out the steps it will take and time it will take to get from one point to the other.
  • Perform a trial rollout – Pick a process or portion of the overall project and start the conversion and rollout. This is essentially a test of your overall plan on a smaller scale which affords the opportunity to see where problems might arise along with potential roadblocks or even failure points.
  • Evaluate and review – After the rollout take what you have learned and implement it into the entire plan, thus fine-tuning your strategy and goals.
  • Continue rollout – Full speed ahead! Convert additional processes until the workflow is fully implemented and everything is in place.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate – Much like any good business plan, you need to constantly monitor what is happening and evaluate if you are meeting goals or not and adjust if necessary. An effective mobility strategy does need to have some fluidity and be open to small tweaks as you go.

The bottom line is that your business could be headed towards a big problem if you don’t know what your enterprise mobile strategy is so it makes sense to start considering the benefits of enterprise mobility and crafting a plan before your competition does.
